USPS Operation Santa

USPS Operation Santa

As the holidays are quickly approaching I wanted to share with you a spectacular organization that helps underprivileged kids and families during Christmas time. This started over a hundred years ago in 1912; the USPS started receiving letters addressed to Santa and they were sorted and put aside.

In 1912, Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock created Santa’s first mailroom, authorizing local postmasters to open up these letters for employees to read and respond.

By 1940s Operation Santa was open to the public and letters poured in from all over! Charitable organizations, corporations and the public across the country all participated.

Over the last few years the program has grown in efforts to spread the word.   By 2017 USPS Operation Santa goes online to become digitized so more people can get involved and adopt more letters. By 2019 with the lasting success of their online program has grown and now anyone in the U.S. can fulfill someone’s holiday wish. In 2020 USPS Operation Santa hits the big screen! The documentary Dear Santa premiered worldwide, taking audiences on a heartwarming tour of the 100-year holiday tradition.
